Throughout history, the poor have often been disenfranchised.

Philippians 2 reminds us that Jesus, who was in very nature God, surrendered His authority and due glory to become one of us. Giving up all rights, He humbled himself to the form of a human and status of servant. Not only was He poor in the eyes of the world, but He experienced the totality of injustice and the inhumanity of humanity.

Do not discriminate against the poor. God himself favors the widows and orphans, those who do not have a “home” in the systems of this world. Express your faith by doing the same.

The kingdom of God is composed of those who are poor according to the standards and measures of this world, for they do not value power, prestige, and possessions to be accumulated here nearly as much as their treasures stored up in heaven.
