Two Shall Become One

At a wedding, a man and woman stand before God and people, professing their love and desire to unite in marriage. Later when expectations clash with reality, many of their struggles are the result of attempts to define the meaning of those vows. All too often, the “two become one” only to discover one or both had a list of exemptions they never intended to include.

I’m reminded of a cartoon in which the car salesman, facing an obviously upset customer, says, “So, you wanted wheels with that?”

To eliminate misunderstanding, Moses instructed, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and strength”. Perhaps he could have said: emotions, will, and actions. The point is the same: “Love the Lord your God with your whole being!”

Ultimately, to be united with God in love requires our all–nothing hidden; nothing held back; totally.
