His Will, Our Destiny
June 6th, 2010
“Must” is a four-letter word for most people, in every sense. “Must” demands; it will not compromise. “Must” offends our independence.
Jesus did not seem to have that problem. He used the word about three dozen times. Around half the time, Jesus referred to His life and ministry: “I must preach the good news of the kingdom of God”, “Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me”, “The Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life”.
The rest of the time Jesus used the word “must” referring to His disciples. “He must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me”; “Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant”; “You must be born again”.
“Must” is where our will surrenders to God’s will, not in grudging defeat but in grateful praise and joyful service.
