Preparing For Obedience

March 13th, 2023

Mark 14:27-31

Jesus was with His disciples for Passover, commonly referred to as the Last Supper. Like any “last supper,” we don’t know that is what it is until after the fact. Jesus knew, though. Without their knowledge, He was preparing them for His death.

Later they hiked to the Mount of Olives. I imagine that they sat around a campfire and gazed up at the desert sky full of stars, the hymn they had sung still in their heads. The companionship they must have felt being together that night came to an abrupt halt when Jesus said, “You will all fall away.” Peter, feeling the sting of that critique, claims he will be faithful. It is a claim Jesus knows Peter cannot keep. The others join in saying they too will be faithful. Jesus, knowing their intentions, didn’t argue with them.

Like Peter, in the passion of the moment, we make claims we often do not have the capacity to keep.
