Fulfill The Law Through Love

October 6th, 2022

Romans 13:8-14

I remember the first new car my wife and I bought. It was the first big purchase that required us to make payments. For five years, we had this payment to make each month. I can tell you that when we made the final payment, it seemed like a great weight had been lifted off us. Since then, we have made similar purchases and felt good when we paid off the debt we owed. Being financially debt free is a great feeling.

Paul says leave no debt outstanding, except for one—the debt to love one another. Jesus said, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these” (Mark 12:30-31). Loving others fulfills the law.

First John 4:11 says, “Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.” That is the debt of love that we continually owe. Because God loves us and we love God, we are to love one another. May today we “clothe [ourselves] with the Lord Jesus Christ,” paying the unending debt of love.
