Hebrews 8:1-6

We did not have a television in our house until I was 12 years old (1972). Looking back, I can remember looking forward to going over to a friend’s house to watch the major league baseball “Game of the Week.” I felt sort of left out back then, but this was a part of my early years for which I am grateful. I learned to visualize the characters in a story that demanded greater creativity than simply watching it on television.

The story of Moses and the voice of God in a burning bush was bigger in my mind than I could have seen on a screen. I was always fascinated by the provision of God in those stories as I imagined them unfolding.

As the Hebrew writer begins to compare the ministry of Jesus to that of Moses, the imagery of the parting of the Red Sea or the parting of an animal to be laid upon an altar pales in comparison to the mediating work of Christ’s sacrifice on our behalf. God’s provision of a superior, covenantal sacrifice—His only begotten Son—exceeds even the most creative of human minds.
