Romans 9:9-24

We recently began the season of Lent with the observance of Ash Wednesday and the declaration “remember you are dust and to dust you shall return.” This sentiment invokes a profound and beautiful balance of humility and self-esteem. Because we have all been formed from the same earthly clay and one day will return to it, we shouldn’t think too highly of ourselves or anyone else. Since we have each been formed by the master artist, the God of creation, we shouldn’t think too lowly of ourselves.

My friend Carolyn is an artist and sculptor. She throws pottery in a variety of forms. She shapes pieces for special occasions and others for more ordinary, everyday use. Some may be used to serve communion in a church. Others for drinking coffee or eating soup in her home. Each has a purpose and is indelibly crafted with her care and artistry.

Paul reminds us, “As it is, there are many parts, but one body” (1 Corinthians 12:20). Each is unique and purposeful. We know ourselves as a work of art by the master craftsman, with beauty and purpose.
