Luke 5:18-26

It is easy to read the scriptures and take for granted both the compassion and the kindness of Christ. We have heard the stories over and again until the actions of Jesus are assumed. And in some ways, perhaps the familiarity is beautiful. It is good that we understand the holy and perfect character of God: God does not only love, but God is actually love. If God is love, then God must be compassionate and kind.

However, those assumptions can also dull us to the absolute beauty and the radical expression of God’s love in the person of Jesus Christ. Jesus did not shy away from those who were marginalized. Jesus was compassionate. The gospels go out of their way to tell us again and again the stories of God’s love lived out. In the story of the paralyzed man, what beauty there is as Jesus not only heals the man, but then immediately calls him to action.

How has God shown you compassion today? How is God calling you to participate in the coming of the kingdom?
