Mark 5:11-20

Too many people get caught up with Jesus allowing the evil spirits to invade the pigs and drown them, overlooking the beauty of a man released from death to life. They only saw loss of income.

It is interesting that Jesus mentions that the man was released from his captivity through God’s mercy. It was God’s desire and power to free him and restore his life. We see how Jesus longs to release us from death so we can become a new creation, a re-creation, becoming transformed into who God created him to be.

Reveling in his new life of freedom from death, the restored man desires to be with Jesus, now the Lord of his life. It is only natural that he would want to be in Jesus’ presence, rejoicing in his new life. Instead, Jesus commissions him to witness to his new life. This the man does—to the whole region. He is unleashed and unafraid.

The Lord calls us to witness to life. Are we “unleashed and unafraid” to witness to God’s great mercy?

Amen! We receive your freedom today. Galatians 5:1 says “Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free.” Thank you, Father, for your mercy. Amen.
