James 3:9-18

Every Halloween my wife and I sit out in the front driveway huddling near the warmth of a firepit and welcoming the many neighbors whose children come to ask: “Trick or Treat?”. We love to make affirming comments about their costumes, and to ask the little ones, “Who is that under that mask?”.

Truth is, we all wear masks. While we don’t like pretending to be someone we’re not, it’s often less dangerous than the risk of allowing others to see just how weak, vulnerable, and flawed we really are. Pretending we have it all together is our superhero mask that displays great power while hiding true weakness. We create all kinds of elaborate “costumes” to hide how fragile we really are.

Proverbs 3:27 instructs that as we follow in the footsteps of our Servant-leader, Jesus, we are set free from the masks and equipped to live with integrity. The inner life begins to truly match what we say and do on the outside. What you see is what you get.

Ask the Lord of wisdom to help you remove the mask, serving others as Jesus humbly serves.
