Jonah 4:1-11

It was Sunday, March 1999. The preacher retold the story of Elijah who found himself in a posture similar to Jonah. Under the broom tree, in his despair, Elijah basically said, go ahead and kill me now.

On this particular Sunday night, I, like Jonah and Elijah, fell on my knees saying, “Go ahead, God, finish wiping us out! I have a husband who does not like you and has no job! We have a pantry without food, utilities pending shut off, everything out of control, and you appear to be siding with bad guys!”

I stood and I was still alive.

Later, while discussing our plight, I had no fight left in me. I was simply ready to let God finish us off. I said, “If you’re ever ready to talk to God about all of this, God cares.” To which my husband responded, “I am.”

In that moment, our bedroom became a sacred and holy place where every part of our life was transformed!
