Acts 17:1-5, 10-15

Paul preached in both Thessalonica and Berea, using Scripture to prove that Jesus was the promised Messiah, but the two groups responded differently. In Thessalonica, some of the Jews wanted to keep the status quo, with the privilege of looking down on those who they assumed didn’t have the same access to God as they did. In their jealousy, they rounded up thugs to destroy Paul.

On the other hand, the Berean Jews diligently searched the Scriptures to see if Paul was right, and joyfully accepted Jesus as the long-awaited Messiah. Attitude defined the two groups. The non-believing Thessalonians weren’t concerned with truth. On the other hand, the Bereans were eager to follow God. Their faith wasn’t in Paul, but in the Scripture they had already accepted as truth.

Do we pick and choose Bible passages to defend our own personal beliefs, or are we eager to be led by the Spirit to God’s truth? How should we prayerfully study the Bible to find God’s guidance in leading others to Christ?
