2 John 1:1-13

Asserting our own independence over and above anyone or anything else is an unbecoming quality of fallen humanity. Look at people in whatever stage of life—toddler, teens, young adult, senior citizen—and you see people trying to exercise independence and control over life.

Are we really in control of our lives? So many things in life are completely out of our control, whether because we lack the resources to control them or we are finite creatures. Some push and prod their way to controlling situations and others, but ultimately we all experience death and lose of control.

God calls us to love. Our independent streak likely bristles a little at the idea of “obedience.” However, God doesn’t control us like puppets. Nor does God put unrealistic, hurtful demands on us. We flourish when we walk each day obeying God.

How have you seen walking in obedience produce maturity and health in your life?

John 14:21 “Whoever has My commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves Me. He who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I too will love him and show Myself to him.”
Our Prophet, Priest, and King – King Jesus has explained how to have a closer, more intimate relationship with our Heavenly Father and with Him. We are exhorted to study the Word of God in order to learn Jesus’ commands. We are taught to pray according to His will (1 John 5:13-15). If we pray according to His will, we know that we have what we asked of Him.
We can pray: Heavenly Father, thank you for loving me. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit and empower me to be an effective witness for you. Empower me to obey Your commands. Take control of my thoughts, words, and deeds, so everything that I think, say, and do will honor and glorify You. Empower me to obey You and to share Your love with everyone I meet – red, yellow, brown, black, and white – they are all precious in Your sight. Thank you for sending Your Son to pay the penalty for my sins. In Jesus’ name – Amen.
