Acts 1:12-22

Has anything good ever come out of a church meeting whose sole purpose wasn’t prayer? A friend pastored a church that had monthly congregational business meetings. These meetings had an open agenda. Any member could ask any question or make any statement they wished. The pastor lamented that nowhere in church history was it recorded that anyone ever got saved at a church business meeting!

Were the believers out of line to take time out to elect a replacement for Judas among the twelve? I don’t know. But, I do know there is no recorded command from Jesus that they do such a thing. He did tell them to tarry and pray until the promise of the Father, the Holy Spirit, came upon them. Nevertheless, they had their meeting, they prayed, and elected Matthias. Matthias was probably a good man and may have been a valiant apostle. We don’t know, because he is never mentioned again.

Like too many of our meetings, action is taken, but nothing changes. However, what happened to them while they prayed changed, and still changes, everything.
