Invitation To The Party

Luke 14:1-14
Jesus is planning a party. When He returns and finally restores His broken creation, there is going to be a giant feast. Jesus tells us that those at the top of his invitation list will be those who share generously with those who cannot possibly repay.
The Pharisees threw a different kind of party. They welcomed those who could repay them with lavish gifts or invitations to even more elaborate parties. They maneuvered to get the best seats at the table, in order to seem more important than the others.
It is easy to live trying to get into the Pharisees’ parties, but Jesus calls us to live differently: “whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave—just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve” (Matt 20:26b-28a). Jesus’ people live looking forward to the party where the guests of honor are those who served others selflessly, especially others who could not repay the favor.
