John 8:12-20

During the Feast of Tabernacles there was a great ceremony called the “Illumination of the Temple,” which involved the ritual lighting of four giant (seventy-five feet high) golden oil-fed candelabras in the Temple. These lamps were lit in the Temple at night to remind the people of the pillar of fire that guided Israel in their journey through the wilderness. Those lamps lit up the entire city of Jerusalem, making it seen from miles away.

The Feast was a reminder that God had promised to send the Light to a dark world full of sin and death. Underneath those huge candelabras stood Jesus, making the impactful statement, “I am the light of the world.” Imagine what it must have been like to be there to witness Jesus saying those controversial words.

We know there is darkness all around us—the violence and crime of a sin-soaked world; do we believe that Jesus is the light of the world? He is brighter than giant lampstands, and illuminates our lives, allowing us to see clearly in the midst of the darkness. Are you following the well-lit path?
