Deuteronomy 8:1-11

Parents, or those who spend time with young children, have likely experienced the endless string of “why?” questions toddlers are so adept at asking. Children’s insatiable need to know how the world works leads them to ask many, many questions. Similarly, God as a parent answers the infinite “why” of the people.

God provides a number of answers about the benefits of obedience and the consequences of disobedience. God makes it clear that it is in the Israelites’ best interest to be obedient by recalling the past and looking forward to the future. God’s answers can be classified into two basic categories: reasons why the Israelites should keep the commandments, and reasons why God is a trustworthy and loving parent who only wants the best for them.

Sometimes it is easy to become too caught up in the “why” questions. What would happen instead if we focus on these two principles? While we do not always understand why things happen the way they do in our lives, we can rest assured that God, the loving parent, has our best interests at heart.
