1 Kings 21:15-29

To understand the fury that is leveled toward Queen Jezebel and King Ahab, we must go back and read 1 Kings 18. In verse 4, we read that Queen Jezebel was persecuting and “killing off the LORD’s prophets” (v. 4). With this, we can begin to understand the Lord’s shocking judgment on her: “Dogs will devour Jezebel by the wall of Jezreel” (21:23).

Ahab’s choices as king of Israel reaped the deserved consequences. Because Ahab “sold [himself] to do evil in the eyes of the LORD” (v. 20), he and his descendants were to be cut off from the land of the living. What happened next is an example of human contrition and God’s forgiveness: “When Ahab heard these words, he tore his clothes, put on sackcloth and fasted. He lay in sackcloth and went around meekly” (v. 27).

What is your response to God’s conviction of sin? Once again, choices bring consequences. The choice is yours–to humbly submit your life to the Lord or continue in sin.
