1 Kings 20:34-43

I recently came across an internet meme that read: “God takes obedience pretty seriously.” At first glance, our initial reaction might be, “Well, of course He does!” However, if we were to be entirely honest with ourselves, most of us find it easy to offer God less than our complete obedience.

King Ahab’s story in 1 Kings 16–20 is one of repeated disobedience. Over and over, Ahab acted on his own judgment rather than God’s direction. Ahab’s disobedience began early when he chose the rival kingdom’s princess, Jezebel, as his wife. Their marriage became the source of a series of choices that led Ahab far from God.

When our focus is not on God’s Word, the tendency to trust in ourselves begins to take precedence over God’s ideal. Initially, we may not experience the direct consequences of choosing our own paths over God’s, but eventually our sin will be uncovered.

Romans 6:23 tells us: “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
