2 Timothy 1:1-14
The apostle Paul was on a death march. He could see it. His journey to Rome accomplished a God-given mission, but he knew it would end in death. The conflict between the new kingdom world of Christ and the political authority in Rome was too great. He did not cower in the face of the conflict; nor did he aggravate it unnecessarily. Instead, he encouraged those who would remain behind. That’s where emerging leader Timothy comes in. Paul wanted to equip Timothy with the same anchored faith.
In a way, all of us are Timothys receiving Paul’s encouragement in the face of our divided kingdoms. Paul reminds us that the anchor of salvation is through Jesus Christ. No kingdom, no matter what impressive weapons or strategies they use, can rob God’s children of their treasure in Christ. Paul’s confidence in this fact-based truth trumped all fear and impending possibilities. The guard that God set around Paul’s believing heart would take him from earthly life to heavenly life. He needed no other escape clause. Neither do we.
