Psalm 142:1-7

Duane was in his early 20s, newly married, working and going to college. He was also a fairly new believer in Jesus Christ. However, Duane was also sick and weak. Severe joint pain, swelling, and weakness gradually limited his activity. Doctors offered little hope for his condition, diagnosed as a type of rheumatoid arthritis. Still, Duane tried to keep up as best he could.

One day, he opened the car door, but couldn’t raise his legs enough to get out. Duane placed both hands under his knees and one-by-one set his legs outside the car. He felt so weak and tired. He began to weep. “O God, unless you help me I don’t know what I will do,” he prayed.

Gradually his fears eased. Duane felt strength returning. An inner voice gave assurance, “It is alright. I am here. You will get better.” Over the next few weeks his strength returned, swelling subsided, pain eased. His blood tests showed improvement.

Now, more than 40 years later, Duane has not been troubled again by those symptoms. God heard his cry, and that made all the difference.
