Mark 10:32-45

In Mark 10, Jesus predicted His death and resurrection for the third time. All that James and John heard, though, was that Jesus would rise. They immediately attempted to ensure that they would not only be with Jesus in heaven, but also that they would sit in seats of honor to Jesus’ right and left.

Jesus responded that He could not grant their request, then explained that if they wanted to be great, they must become servants. The disciples had heard Jesus’ teachings and watched Him perform miracles, but still they were not transformed: They still expected to gain some sort of royal status in exchange for following Him.

In a number of ways, we are like the disciples. We have witnessed the transforming power of Jesus, and we desire to serve Him, but subconsciously, we expect some sort of return on our investment for following Him.

How humbling Mark 10 should be for us! Jesus, the Son of God, came to earth to serve us, to die for our salvation. As Christ’s followers, we should make ourselves His servants.

God have mercy on us. Your Word says Be still and know I am God.
That we would always put you first.
