Can you imagine seeing someone walking on water? You have just witnessed 5,000 people eat full meals from a young boys’ lunch and now you see someone walking on the water toward your boat. The disciples’ reaction is not surprising. It is how many would react. In Mark 6 it states, “When they saw him walking on the lake, they thought he was a ghost. They cried out, because they all saw him and were terrified” (Mark 6:49-50).
It must have been amazing to be one of Jesus’ chosen disciples. To witness the feeding of the 5,000 and Jesus’ walking on water in one day is almost unimaginable. Even though we cannot witness these events firsthand, we can have the same encounters with Jesus through His Word. While we may not have been there when the winds were shaking the boat and a figure was coming towards the disciples, we can experience God in our lives in our times of fear. The hope is that when He is walking toward us, we will recognize Him, and we will trust Him when He says, “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”
