Mark 1:35-45

A sign on my refrigerator reads, “A day hemmed in prayer seldom unravels.” Jesus exemplifies that. In Mark 1, He finds a place away from everyone and begins “stitching” long before the sun comes up. By the time Peter comes looking for Him, Jesus hits the ground running. Sound familiar?

Because Jesus was divine, we might think it took no effort for Him to perform His ministry. Yet, He was human, too. He worked within the same physical and time constraints as we do, and that brought enormous fatigue. The Eternal One didn’t have eternity to complete His mission on earth. He needed strength to meet the demands. And that came on His knees, alone with the Father.

The hectic pace of life can overwhelm us. Before we ever get out of bed, our minds race with what needs to get done and what can be eliminated from our “to do” lists. Prayer should not be among the deletions but should head the list. Before the day threatens to rip apart at the seams, may we grab needle and thread and meet with God.
