Luke 4:31-37

“Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never harm me.” My mom taught me to remember that when anybody hurt my feelings with unkind words. What she was trying to explain was that name-calling or hurtful words could not harm me physically; just ignore the taunt and refrain from physical retaliation. Her words of kindness and authority have stayed with me all my life.

When someone speaks with authority we listen. In Luke 4:32 we find that Jesus was able to teach with authority because His words came from heaven above, the Father himself. “Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me” (Matt. 28:18-19). When Jesus spoke, demons were driven out; when Jesus spoke, fevers were rebuked; when Jesus spoke, lives were changed; they still are as Jesus speaks His Word through men and women today. Individuals from all walks of life, who find Jesus as Savior and friend can speak with authority.
