1 Corinthians 10:23—11:1

Tic Tacs are life savers. We are all so breath conscious. Job expressed concern as he confided in his friends, “My breath is offensive to my wife” (Job 19:17). If one was inclined to take a survey, researchers would probably conclude that church folks are the greatest consumers of breath mints. Before popping a mint into my mouth, I always offer one to those around me, with a quick explanation, “It’s a mint, not a hint.” We don’t always have bad breath.

When God formed Adam from the dust of the ground, He “breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul” (Genesis 2:7, KJV). R. A. Torey explains, “It was not discussion but the breath of God that banished nonbelievers of old . . .”* It was the breath of the resurrected Christ that empowered His disciples to make disciples. As Jesus sent them out, “He breathed on them and said, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit.’” (John 20:22). God’s breath is forever fresh as He infuses us with power to pray effective, fervent prayers for the lost, so that they may be saved.
