Saving Others

Jamal was raised as a Muslim in a radically Islamic country. One day his uncle caught him reading the Bible. “You’re not thinking of becoming a Christian, are you?” the uncle said. “Because if you do, you should know that I will be the one appointed by the family to kill you!”

Jamal did become a Christian and joined a secret “house church” of 14 young men. Unfortunately, someone spied on them. Twelve were hunted down and killed; Jamal escaped to a neighboring nation and eventually came to study overseas. When he was nearing graduation, I asked, “What now?” “Oh,” he said, “I am going back to bring the good news to my people.” Back in danger? Taking his wife and children back? For seven years now he and his family have discovered that the safest place in the world is the center of God’s will. Whole communities have accepted the Lord.

Jesus did not put himself first, and his sacrifice saved us. Jamal and his family are giving their lives every day, and many are being saved. I wonder . . . if we focus not on ourselves today but on others, . . . who will be saved?
