Do people really know what they don’t know? Nicodemus was one of those who seemed not to know. He needed to be reborn but even though he was in the presence of the Savior, he did not understand how to proceed. Under the cover of darkness Nicodemus comes to Jesus. But instead of revealing his ignorance he tries to hide it by telling Jesus what he knew. Because the Lord is the one who searches the mind and the heart, Jesus was able to look beyond Nicodemus’s initial declarations to see his heart’s deepest questions. Christ exposed him to the light and unfolded the truth of God’s loved-filled salvation plan to this member of the Jewish ruling council.
Did Nicodemus turn from the need to declare his own certainties and embrace the answers Jesus gave?
When we leave the shadowy confusion of our own tightly held certainties we can then, like Nicodemus, experience the light of Christ for our deepest heart needs.
