Luke 1:57-80

Zechariah and Elizabeth were surely surprised to learn they were going to have a baby! Not only were they past child-bearing years, but they had endured many disappointing years of having no children. One day while Zechariah was fulfilling his priestly duty, the angel Gabriel delivered a heavenly announcement that he and his wife would have a son, a child of promise who would bring joy to many. This news was unbelievable, remarkable, incredible–and surprising!

By divine instruction, these humble parents named their son John. John later became the voice that introduced Jesus, who had come to save his people from their sins.

Is there a lingering disappointment in your life? Have you waited patiently for God to answer a prayer? In this season of Advent, remember that God views events from eternity’s viewpoint, and the answer may come in an unexpected way. Are you ready to be surprised?
