Lawless Living!

When I was a kid, I thought my parents made up rules just to annoy me. I’m sure thousands of children think the same thing. Some children dream of an island like the one depicted in William Golding’s Lord of the Flies, where we can do whatever we want. Then we grow-up, we mature, and we discover that lawlessness can lead to chaos.

How ironic that now as adults, we find those same rules that drove us to the verge of insanity keep us sane. How did we become the rules that we sought to overthrow? The coup we dream of staging never happens. Rather, we are overcome by the law of love.

When faith comes, it overthrows our lawlessness and rebellion. Grace, faith, and holiness are not enemies to be vanquished, but callings to follow. The Holy Spirit empowers and calls us to move from childish rebellion to faithful discipleship.

I was furious at my mother when I was younger for telling me “You’re 18 now and on your own my time of taking care of you is up. I will be here for you but I am no longer responsible for you.” I now realize she did it for my own good. I am a strong woman and know I can do anything. I just wished Mom was here so I could thank her.

Ya, isn’t it amazing how being independent, or even worse, being responsible for others quickly changes our tune on responsibility
