Earnest Repentance

October 13th, 2024

Revelation 3:14-22

The aspect of parenting I enjoy the least is disciplining my children. None of us are looking for every chance to have to ground our children, send them to their rooms, or sit them in their time-out chairs.

We all know why we discipline our children, however. We are trying to form them into good people. Without discipline and rebuke, they will most likely grow up to be self-centered and obnoxious. No parent looks at their child and hopes they grow up to be a terrible person. Instead, we hope our children will have a positive impact on the world. Therefore, we discipline them, hoping they will go down the path we hope they will follow.

God does the same thing with us. Our response to this loving discipline should be earnest repentance. True, earnest repentance is more than simple remorse. Remorse is when you’re sorry you’ve done something because you got caught. Repentance includes the godly sorrow that helps us confess the wrong we’ve done and also turn away from it toward godly living.
