The Constancy of Change

September 8th, 2024

Psalm 107:33-43

To study nature is to observe change. Water freezes, melts, evaporates, and rains back down. Leaves turn from green to orange to brown. Long empty reservoirs are refilled to overflowing. Yet as Psalm 107 says, God also does the opposite, turning a rainforest into a desert, perhaps. Both come from His loving wisdom, though it may seem confusing from our perspective.

God is also busy making constant changes with humanity. Like a great general, teacher, or coach, God has a perspective that we do not. It is easy to trust God when He is turning our mistakes into victories, but His wisdom is also at work when our health fails or when we lose loved ones.

The end of Psalm 107 reminds us, “The upright see and rejoice.” We will not always understand, but, if we know God, we can believe that all of His deeds are loving and part of a greater plan. Let us see it and rejoice in it.
