God Always Hears Us

Genesis 21:14-21

Have you ever been guilty of questioning God or thinking God cannot hear you? As Abraham sent Hagar and their son Ishmael away, I imagine Hagar was questioning God.

Even Abraham was reluctant to send them away. In verse 11, we read, “The matter distressed Abraham greatly because it concerned his son.” God comforted Abraham by confirming that Hagar and Ishmael should leave; then promised that Ishmael would become a great nation.

The next day, Hagar and Ishmael were sent off with some food and water. The food and water were soon depleted, which left them in a critical condition. In fact, their condition was so grave that Hagar left her son (scholars say he was probably at least 14 years old) lying under a bush crying because she could not stand to watch him die. God heard Hagar and Ishmael! An angel was sent to comfort them. Then God opened Hagar’s eyes to a well and promised that Ishmael would be a great nation!

God, help us never to forget: You always hear us!
