Wisdom In Action

James 3:7-18

My brother has the gift of wisdom, and I love to watch him in action. Our family spends a week together every summer in the mountains of New Mexico. Although we love each other, with 10 personalities from age 65 down to age 4 in the same cabin, the dynamics can be difficult.

When we face a problem, it is my brother who quietly comes up with a solution. He is considerate of all the personalities, yet peace-loving and impartial. Often, his own wishes take a back seat and his gentle manner settles everyone down with that submissive and pure heart he wears so well.

The gift of wisdom is a beautiful thing and so necessary in our noisy and scary world. If you have someone in your family or among your friends who has the gift of wisdom, treasure that person. If you have a problem to work through, ask your wisdom person to pray about it and give you advice.

Then listen carefully for the voice of the Holy Spirit who offers wisdom from above. God tells us to ask for wisdom (James 1:5), and that’s a request God loves to grant.
