Philippians 1:1-11.
If we had to select the one most influential leader (other than Jesus) in the early church, who would it be? Most scholars would point to the apostle Paul. His missionary travels brought the gospel to much of the known world. His letters to the churches form a good percentage of the New Testament and still speak powerfully to us today. We might be tempted to put Paul on a pedestal.
Like us, some of the believers in Philippi assuredly thought of him as a different category of Christ-follower. However, from the very start of Paul’s letter, he made sure the Philippians know they were in this together. They “share in God’s grace” (v. 7) and “partnered” in the gospel (v. 5) from day 1. Later, Paul reminded them that he could not have been effective at all if it were not for their prayers, their giving, and their encouragement. We see the apostle of apostles overflowing with thankfulness for this shared gospel work!
Who has been a partner in the gospel in your life? Truly, none of us could ever say that we’ve done it alone. Take time to reach out to that person and thank them (like Paul did) for “sharing in God’s grace” with you.
