Forgive Them
January 29th, 2026
Luke 23:32-43.
It feels like much of society is filled with anger, outrage, hatred, and contempt. It seems like sometimes all it would take to set people off is giving someone a side eye, or maybe what used to be called “the stink eye.”
We live in very volatile times. From culture wars and politics, from professional sports to even driving on the highway, people these days seem to be easily triggered. When things are going on that go against our sensibilities, when we see something immoral or unjust, it feels like fingernails screeching down a chalkboard, sending shivers down our spines.
As those who are training and learning the new way of life according to God’s kingdom, Jesus has given us a model for training our reactions to the negative things we see in the world: “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” This simple prayer can transform our hearts and minds, offering us a much-needed shift in perspective in those stressful moments. Feel the feelings in the moment and release them as you pray to forgive.
Allow this prayer to guide you as you learn the rhythms of God’s forgiveness found in His kingdom.
