Keeping Watch for The Kingdom

January 5th, 2026

Matthew 12:22-29.

When we read the New Testament as Christians, we often think of the Pharisees as the bad guys. How could they have missed that Jesus was the Messiah they had been waiting for all their lives? How could they think that Jesus was driving out demons in the name of Beelzebul? Surely, we never mistake the things of God for the things of Satan.

I’m not so sure. A verse that haunts me is Genesis 28:16, when Jacob thinks to himself at Bethel, “Surely the LORD is in this place, and I was not aware of it.” One of the fears in my life is that I will be unaware of how God is at work in the places He has called me to serve.

I don’t want to miss where God is at work in the world. To a lesser degree, I don’t want to miss where Satan is at work in the world either. In knowing where Satan is at work in the world, we have the opportunity to shine Christ’s light into the world. It’s in shining that light that we reveal the kingdom of God to the world.
