A Chosen People
November 16th, 2025
1 Peter 2:1-10.
In elementary school, I was the youngest, smallest kid in my class. This is not an advantage when it comes to recess games of kickball. The smallest kid is not likely to be the first one chosen.
You know how it works: The two biggest kids were the captains, and they started choosing sides. Generally, their choice was based on who could kick the ball the farthest, or who would give the big captain a little something extra from his/her lunch box (kickball team captains at recess were not above bribery). Or they would pick their friends.
Usually, the last ones standing were the two scrawniest kids: me or Bobby (also a diminutive one). “You take Bobby. I’ll take Robby,” or vice versa, was how this generally went. It’s a bummer when one is chosen only because they have to be chosen. Teacher’s rules. Everybody plays.
That’s not how God chooses. God chooses us because He loves us. God chooses us not because of our accomplishments. God chooses us—as crazy as this sounds—to help build His kingdom. God chooses us to be His ambassadors. He chooses us to be His hands and feet. He chooses us to show His love in this world. We are a chosen people.
