Don’t Choose Poorly

1 Peter 1:13-21.

There is a scene from a popular 1980s action movie that speaks to today’s passage. An adventurous archaeologist, a 500-year-old knight, and a couple of people on the side of evil are in a room filled with dozens of chalices that could possibly be the Holy Grail—which they believe drinking from will give them immortality.

One of the bad guys chooses an ornate chalice and dips it into the water. He takes a big gulp hoping to have eternal life. Instead of eternal life, he rapidly ages in a matter of seconds until he is turned to dust and blows away. It’s a disturbing scene. The old knight who was standing guard over the chalices makes a famous observation: “He chose . . . poorly.”

Don’t choose poorly. Offer your body as a living sacrifice. Do not conform to the patterns of this world. Every day, choose to follow God, submitting to His guidance and grace. Allow God to transform you from the inside out. Be holy, as He is holy!
