God Calls Oddballs
November 14th, 2025
John 15:9-17.
God has a history of choosing those whom the world would not choose. He chooses those who are overlooked, disregarded, and even cast aside by the whole of society.
God chose Abraham to be the father of His great people, even though fear sometimes made him untruthful. God chose Noah to be the only person (along with his family) to not tread water during the flood. Yet after the flood, Noah got drunk one night and embarrassed his sons. God chose Moses the murderer and Rahab the prostitute. God chose Gideon to lead an army, and even called him a “mighty warrior” as he was hiding from the enemy in a cistern. God chose David, who committed murder and adultery as king.
In the New Testament, God chose Christianity’s Public Enemy No. 1 in Saul (later Paul). Shouldn’t overseeing the murder and arrests of Christians disqualify one from Christian service? If anyone on the planet should have been on the “do not call” list, it should have been Saul. Still God called him.
God doesn’t always choose the perfect or the best. God chooses the troubled, the malcontents, and the oddballs. Those who have been beaten up by the world. The ones who’ve got scars and baggage and pains and worries and fears.
Still, God saw them and said: “I choose you.” God still calls oddballs today!
