Words Matter
November 6th, 2025
Deuteronomy 31:9-13.
How long has it been since you read or heard someone use the term tabula rasa? I doubt if it was recently. It’s one of those terms full of expressive meaning, but also ancient, uncommon, and relegated to dusty books in libraries.
One might use it to refer to the absence of preconceived notions or ideas. It might describe a clean sheet, referencing a new start. It also acknowledges that words matter! They encapsulate a world of meaning, value, instruction, and application.
Being a leader carries an emphasis on connecting and collaborating. At the heart of this effort are words that form our lexicon, vocabulary, and blueprints by which a faithful future is envisioned.
The connection between hearing and learning is tenuous at best. Because one hears information does not mean it has been internalized as information-shaping response or behavior.
Whether it’s at home, in your role as a public leader, or in community with the people of God, take time to instill knowledge.
