By Grace, Through Faith

Romans 3:21-31.

Perhaps you grew up playing a particular real estate board game that involved a fortune in fake money. Each player traveled the board using dice, hoping not to land in jail because they rolled “doubles” three times in a row. However, if you found yourself doing fictitious time, all was not lost, especially if you had a free pass. You were able to do the crime without penalty.

In today’s passage, Paul reminded the Romans that God’s grace wasn’t a license to disregard the law. Grace frees humanity from sin but doesn’t grant us the ability to do as we please. Because we believe, we respect the law.

He also reminded them—and us—that we’ve all fallen short. We are in no way righteous. Righteousness comes from God alone. We are totally unable to get ourselves out of the sinful mess we’re born into. We need the sacrifice Christ made on the cross. Without it, our sentence is clear: Eternal separation from God.

Christ fulfilled the law through His death and resurrection. We’re no longer destined to separation from God. You, me, and anyone who chooses to believe in God will be saved by His grace through faith.
