Only For Love
October 23rd, 2025
John 14:15-24.
When is the last time you did something purely out of love? I think it’s safe to say at one time or another, we’ve all endured an event or done a task that was more for someone else’s benefit. Usually, it’s something that if it were solely up to us, we would opt out. We do these things because someone we love dearly asked us to and because it makes them happy.
Christ calls us to unconditional obedience. This isn’t an obedience of convenience, but one done out of love. It means that there will be times that what God is asking of us won’t be something we find appealing. It might even be something that’s difficult, unpleasant, or requires great sacrifice.
It’s safe to assume the cross wasn’t Jesus’ idea of a good time. Luke records a conversation Christ had with the Father just before He was taken away to be crucified. Jesus made it clear that He wasn’t choosing the cross because it was something He wanted, but out of love and obedience to God.
As Christ-followers, it is our responsibility to do likewise, out of love and gratitude.
