God’s Grace Is Sufficient
October 17th, 2025
2 Corinthians 12:1-10.
As we read today’s passage, we turn our attention not to Paul’s thorn in the flesh. Rather we look to God’s grace afforded to Paul and to us during painful and “thorny” trials in our lives. As we make this shift, we turn to the gift and Giver of grace. This gift given to us by Jesus is offered in a culture of acquisition and taking. However, like the communion elements we receive on Sabbath, we come to this gift once again, with open hands, not taking but receiving.
We are fully aware like Paul of our shortcomings, but like Paul we must become healthy receivers. This is often a tall order in our culture of self-sufficiency and tendency to grasp at our own solutions. The Giver, in the gift of grace, reminds us that we are loved beyond our wildest comprehension.
We want to, and often do, focus on the shortcomings, the weakness. What if, however, we focus on being a faithful recipient of the Giver’s grace? What if we received the sufficiency of the grace offered for our lives to be formed and shaped so we can humbly become givers of grace and peace to those around us?
