Make Good Choices

October 6th, 2025

Numbers 13:1-3, 16-25.

One of the things I talk about with students is making good choices. Every day, my students are faced with thousands of choices to make: Stay in line, raise a hand to ask a question, follow the classroom expectations, and so on. Some choices are easier than others and require very little effort.

The Israelites had a choice to make: Go explore the land of Canaan before them, or not. Moses was sending them ahead to find information about the land: How habitable was the land, what the people were like, how big the towns were, how rich the farmland was. They were even tasked with bringing back some of the fruit.

Not such a hard choice to make. They were tired of the desert. They were ready to be home. To top it off, this land was likely rich in resources—a marvelous new place to live! Sure, they would go, gladly!

At first, saying yes might not seem so hard. Just like these Israelite leaders, you might find yourself with a choice that isn’t too daunting. Take care to continue to lean into God, even when (maybe especially when) the choices are easy to make. This is the time you are building strength in your faith for the next hard choice.
