Playing The Game
September 30th, 2025
Leviticus 19:11-22.
Keeping score has its place. Learning how to win as well as how to lose is an important part of growing up. Yet, the old saying is correct: “It’s not whether we win or lose, it’s how we play the game.”
When Christ-followers play the game of life, how we play is what matters most. We don’t always get it right, but sometimes (with God’s help) we knock it out of the park. As long as we’re following God’s two biggest rules—love God and love our neighbor—we’re going to succeed in God’s eyes. We can’t love God without loving our neighbor. So, when we obey the second greatest commandment in God’s playbook, we are automatically following the first.
Sin makes it difficult to not forgo scorekeeping when it comes to loving our neighbor. It would be much easier if God would just give us a giant piece of chalk and let us maintain records of wrongs.
Fortunately, that isn’t how God likes to do business. The Bible says that all are lost. God knew we’d need His help to navigate this life, and that includes loving all of our neighbors.
