Mark 1:1-8.
We are constantly fed new information, and it’s not easy to know whether it is good or bad. This is why we flock to what is popular. News stories and posts “trend” because we desire to get in on what is authentic, interesting, compelling, or relatable—something good.
Mark opens by telling us that what we are reading is the good news of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Surprisingly, he then starts the story by telling us about someone who is not Jesus.
John the Baptist was trending. The whole countryside was going out to him. What an amazing revival moment! What was it about John’s message that was so captivating? It was because God was the center of John’s message. John’s work was not for his own sake but for the sake of Jesus, God’s salvation plan. John called out for repentance but also understood that he only pointed to the Savior.
It is important to remember that it is not just any good thing we are seeking. We must discern what is good by grounding ourselves in the good news of Jesus. The church, like John, lives the life of a messenger who calls people, not to itself, but to the grace and power of Jesus.
