No Plan B
September 1st, 2025
Deuteronomy 11:8-15.
The adage, “Don’t put all your eggs in one basket,” seems wise advice for so many different things. Diverse portfolios make for safer money management. Backup files ensure we won’t lose documents. Some people even have another team to root for just in case their team has a bad season.
We love a good backup plan. Yet sometimes having a fallback means we are less careful with our first choice. The same can be said of our relationship with God. Our relationship with God is exclusive; with God, there is no secondary option.
In Deuteronomy, God gave the people the land and the decrees of the law. This gift was bound to a relationship; they were to have one God. Trusting in God is not simply a wise investment, the best of many good options. Rather, there is no righteousness, freedom, or future without God. So, God’s people must obey, resisting the temptation to trust in secondary gods, persons, or commands.
There will be temptations to have a “faith backup plan”: Choosing one way on Sunday and another on Monday; being internally faithful but obeying only when it’s easy; picking and choosing those toward whom we will act Christlike.
We are called to wholehearted devotion as we live in His promises.
