Bring Good News

August 31st, 2025

Isaiah 52:7-12.

Isaiah metaphorically envisions “watchmen” on the ruins of “Zion” (v. 8). They see a runner crossing the mountains approaching them. From where does he come? What news does he bring? Is it good or bad?

Soon they hear him shout: “peace,” “good news,” “salvation.” And then, what they are most waiting to hear, “Your God reigns!” (v. 7). Yes! God is still their King!

Jerusalem’s citizens now knew that God had not abandoned them. He had “lay bare his holy arm” (v. 10) and defeated the idolatrous powers of the great Babylonian and Persian rulers. Their fellow Jews languishing in Babylonian exile for many decades had been set free and were coming home!

Isaiah was speaking of God’s salvation as more than a physical rescue. God’s salvation is spiritual and for “all the nations,” extending to “all the ends of the earth” (v. 10). J. Alec Motyer says, “Isaiah envisages a day when faith will pass into sight and the Victor himself will be seen face to face.”*

That Victor is Jesus.
