Unashamedly Profess Christ

August 30th, 2025

Hebrews 13:15-21.

Old Testament worshipers regularly offered burnt offerings of animals at the tabernacle and later at the temple. This offering was called the “fellowship” or “peace” (ESV) sacrifice (Leviticus 6:12). The Septuagint (the Greek translation of the Old Testament) translation of Leviticus 7:2 suggests that this sacrifice was also called a sacrifice of “praise,” saying, “A man should offer it for praise.”* Moreover, the duty of the priest in charge of the fire on the altar was to keep it burning “continually” (v. 13, ESV).

Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross put an end to sacrifices once and for all (see Hebrew 10:8-18). Yet, citing the Greek of Leviticus 7:2, the Hebrews’ author suggests a new kind of offering—”a sacrifice of praise”—”continually” on the “lips” of those who “openly profess [God’s] name” (13:15).

This is a sacrifice that you and I can joyfully offer to God in the presence all people.
